Sunday, April 6, 2014 during its 10 am Worship Service, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester will host the 2nd Annual Irving and Annabel Wolfson Memorial Lecture on Liberal Religion. The lecture, established in 2012 from a bequest of Dr. Irving Wolfson, retired local cardiologist and long-time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester, is devoted in part to answering the following: “Irving and Annabel Wolfson were agnostics who tried to live by the highest moral standards. From where does that motivation come to live by such standards to a person or persons who did not believe in a hereafter of rewards and punishments?”

This year’s lecture, “Religious Humanism: Reason and Reverence in an Age of Science” will be delivered by Rev. Dr. William Murry, Past-President of Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, IL and Minister Emeritus of River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda, MD. Among his publications, Dr. Murry is author of Becoming More Fully Human: Religious Humanism as a Way of Life (Religious Humanism Press, 2011), Reason and Reverence: Religious Humanism for the Twenty-first Century (Skinner House, 2006) and A Faith For All Seasons: Liberal Religion and the Crises of Life (River Road, 1994). Dr. Murry and his wife Barbara currently reside in Rockville, MD.

Dr. Murry will also be honored by the Wolfson Lecture Committee this Sunday with the 2014 Dr. Irving & Annabel Wolfson Award for his contributions to Humanism.

A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester is located at 90 Holden Street, Worcester, MA 01606-3411, and is a barrier-free and LGBTQI welcoming congregation.
