AAHS is dedicated to creating a welcoming place for non-theists within the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica and in the wider Community. We are a group within the UUCCSM church family for anybody who embraces the values of UUism while also holding a rational worldview without the need for a supernatural creator.
As UUs we are united by shared values embodied in the 7 Principles. Like many who hold a traditional theist view, we find inspiration in the wonders of the universe, strength in our community, and compassion that motivates us to make the world a better place for all.
Our focus is to create meaning in our lives in the here-and-now rather than hoping for the hereafter. We celebrate the triumphs of the arts and sciences to ease human suffering and enrich the precious time we each have to be alive.
AAHS seeks to create fellowship and dialog with people from across the broad spectrum of beliefs in our UU tradition. As part of the growing groundswell of secularism, we feel that non-theists have something to offer in the ways we live our UU values.
In a congregation of 380, our mailing list is about 80 and we normally get 15-30 at a monthly meeting. We've hosted a number of national speakers including Greg Epstein, Phil Zuckerman and Herb Silverman. Several of those talks are available at the UUCCSM YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/UUSantaMonica
We meet on the 4th Sunday of each month following the regular services, usually at 12:30-2:00 PM in the Cottage (11:30 during June-August due to one service only during the summer). Our speakers and event are open to the public. And we enjoy teaming up with fellow UUs and other secular groups for community service and socializing.
